Nairobi
residents can expect smoother roads by the end of this year as the national
government and Nairobi City County push forward with a Sh2.1 billion road
improvement programme covering 62 kilometres across the capital.
The joint initiative was reaffirmed on Wednesday during the official opening of the Savanna–Stage 17 Bridge in Soweto.
President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor
Johnson Sakaja said the project will be delivered by December 2025 under the
ongoing partnership between the two levels of government.
The road
upgrades will benefit several constituencies. Starehe and Kamukunji are each
set to receive 7.9 kilometres of rehabilitated roads, while Kasarani and
Roysambu will also get 7.9 kilometres combined. Westlands is allocated 4.9
kilometres, and Dagoretti, Lang’ata, and other areas are also part of the
rollout.
The largest
share will go to Embakasi, where 24 kilometres of roadworks are planned across
the South, Central, East, and West constituencies.
Speaking
during the bridge opening, President Ruto underscored his administration’s
commitment to urban infrastructure.
“We shall
continue partnering with the Nairobi County Government to improve roads and
infrastructure. It is our collective responsibility to ensure every road is
done,” he said.
Governor
Sakaja echoed the President’s remarks and praised the swift progress of the
Savanna–Stage 17 project.
“We came
here a few months ago when this road was impassable. The President made a
promise, and today it has been delivered. The Savanna–Stage 17 road is ready
for use,” Sakaja said.
He added
that other roads in Embakasi East, including Aviation Road to Fedha and Gate B
Road, will be completed within three weeks.
“Many more
roads across all 17 constituencies will be upgraded in the coming months,” the
governor said.
County
officials say the Sh2.1 billion programme is on track and will significantly
ease transport and improve connectivity across Nairobi once completed.
