The National Youth Service has raised the alarm over a fraudulent scheme targeting its graduates with fake job offers allegedly from UNICEF Kenya.
In an alert issued on Tuesday July 15, NYS Employment Liaison Officer Samson Kiptum cautioned that scammers have been contacting NYS officers and graduates while impersonating officials from UNICEF Kenya.
The ELO, after conducting background checks, confirmed that UNICEF Kenya has no such employment opportunities currently available.
“There is a scammer on the loose who seems to be targeting unsuspecting NYS graduates,” the alert reads in part.
“The rig, which seems well coordinated, is calling NYS officers purporting to be UNICEF Kenya,” Kiptum said.
Kiptum urged graduates to exercise extreme caution and conduct proper verification before sharing any personal information.
“Always undertake due diligence before giving out your data. The Employment Liaison Office iko chonjo,” he added, assuring graduates that the ELO is on high alert.
In a stern warning to graduates, Kiptum said that graduates who fail to verify such claims risk falling victim to fraud.
“Ku scamiwa pengine wewe ujitakie,” he stated.
The NYS advised graduates to report any suspicious messages or calls to the relevant authorities immediately.
Graduates were also advised to immediately report any suspicious communication to NYS authorities as the scam targets continue to spread.
“The Employment Liaison Office is on high alert,” NYS assured, calling on graduates to remain vigilant.
"Be warned they are looking for you."
NYS is a government organisation under the Ministry of Public Service, Youth, and Gender Affairs that focuses on youth empowerment through training, national service, and employment opportunities.
It facilitates job placement for graduates in both the public and private sectors, often through its Employment Liaison Office upon completion of technical and vocational training in fields like engineering, agriculture, fashion design, construction, hospitality, and information technology.
They are also occasionally deployed for community projects like slum upgrading, road construction, water projects, disaster response, and environmental conservation.
Prior to the skills development, NYS recruits undergo basic paramilitary training to instill discipline, patriotism, and physical fitness.
