  • "The Commission highly regrets any inconvenience this may cause and appreciates your understanding as it works towards serving you better," the IEBC stated.
  • The electoral body reassured Kenyans that the registration records of 22,120,458 voters remain secure and unaltered during the migration process.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced a scheduled maintenance exercise on its voter verification portal.

The commission said the exercise is part of an ongoing transition to upgraded infrastructure.

In a statement, IEBC said the upgrade is aimed at enhancing system performance and strengthening security in preparation for upcoming electoral activities.

IEBC acknowledged the temporary inconvenience the maintenance may cause, urging the public for patience during the upgrade process.

"The Commission highly regrets any inconvenience this may cause and appreciates your understanding as it works towards serving you better," the IEBC stated.

The electoral body reassured Kenyans that the registration records of 22,120,458 voters—captured during the 2022 General Election—remain secure and unaltered during the migration process.

The commission promised to notify the public once the system is fully operational and ready for use.

This announcement comes amid growing concern online over the integrity of the voter register, fueled by a viral post on social media alleging that the commission was preparing to purge over two million so-called ghost voters.

The post, which claimed counties like Kiambu, Meru, Nairobi, and Nyeri had the highest number of these fictitious voters.

However, on June 5, IEBC issued a strong denial, labeling the post as false and misleading.

"Please note that the commission currently neither has a chairperson nor members of the commission. Therefore, any information circulating on social media is null and void," read the commission’s statement, posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The IEBC is yet to be reconstituted. President William Ruto formally appointed Erastus Ethekon as IEBC chairperson on June 10, along with six new commissioners, marking a key step in rebuilding the electoral body following the post-2022 transition.

IEBC emphasised that no voter register audit is underway, nor has any directive been issued to alter the electoral roll.

"IEBC remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening Kenya's democracy," the commission said.
