Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has now expressed confidence that the upcoming by-elections in the country will result in either the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) or the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) winning exclusively.
While posting on his social media handle on Saturday, Kaluma dismissed the possibility of other political outfits making inroads in the current political landscape, stating that the country’s electoral momentum has already shifted in favour of the two dominant parties.
The MP also took a swipe at opposition leaders over the delayed swearing-in of new IEBC commissioners, insisting it will not change the outcome of any elections.
“All upcoming by-elections will be won by ODM and UDA. The opposition can delay the swearing in of the IEBC for as long as they want, but they won't escape their fate! ODM-UDA- 50 bila break,” he stated.
He further dismissed rival parties as politically inconsequential, stating that they simply lack the numerical strength to mount a serious challenge.
“They don’t have the numbers,” he said.
His comments come amid growing public concern over the lack of a fully constituted IEBC, which has cast uncertainty over pending by-elections.
Despite this, Kaluma expressed confidence that whichever way the process goes, the electoral victories will still favour the two parties.
Kaluma’s remarks clash with assertions by Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has insisted that his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) will sweep elective positions in the upcoming by-elections.
Gachagua has previously stated that the DCP is building grassroots structures specifically to dominate local contests and that Kenyans are ready for an alternative to both ODM and UDA.
While Kaluma projects an ODM-UDA takeover of all available
seats, Gachagua has portrayed DCP as the next big force on the ground.
Several regions across Kenya are expected to hold by-elections once the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is fully reconstituted.
Among the key constituencies facing by-elections are Baringo (senatorial seat), which fell vacant following the death of Senator William Cheptumo, and Banisa, where MP Kullow Hassan died in 2023.
Magarini Constituency will also head to the polls after the Supreme Court nullified the 2022 election results.
In Ugunja, a by-election is expected after MP Opiyo Wandayi was appointed to the Cabinet, while Malava will hold a mini-poll following the death of MP Malulu Injendi in early 2025.
Mbeere North is also on the list after MP Geoffrey Ruku was appointed to the Cabinet. Another by-election is expected in Kasipul, where MP Charles Were was assassinated in April 2025.
These by-elections have remained on hold due to the delayed
reconstitution of the IEBC.
