Mother of football giants Mariga and Wanyama laid to rest in Soy, Uasin Gishu

The Wanyama family, one of Kenya’s most prominent sporting dynasties, on Saturday laid to rest their matriarch, Mama Mildred Ayiemba Osotsi Wanyama, in a solemn ceremony held in Soy, Uasin Gishu county.

Mama Mildred passed away on the morning of Saturday, June 14, leaving behind a remarkable legacy rooted in faith, family, and sport.

She was the beloved mother of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President McDonald Mariga and former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama.

A devoted wife to legendary AFC Leopards midfielder Noah Wanyama, Mama Mildred played a central role in nurturing a family of athletes who have gone on to bring pride to the country.

In addition to Mariga and Victor, her sons Thomas and Sylvester also pursued professional football careers.

Her daughter, Mercy Wanyama, has made a name for herself in basketball, representing Kenya on the international stage.

The funeral service was attended by several leaders and members of the sporting fraternity, among them Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, Soy MP David Kiplagat, Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi, and Mogotio MP Reuben Kiborek.

Speaking during the burial, Sudi paid tribute to the late Mildred, highlighting her influence both as a mother and a community figure.

“As we gather here in Soy, Uasin Gishu county, to bid her farewell, we celebrate the life of a woman whose legacy will live on through her sons' achievements in football and beyond,” Sudi said.

“Her dedication to the church and support for her children's passions are an inspiration to many. May God comfort the family and grant Rev Mildred Ayiemba Osotsi Wanyama's soul eternal peace," Sudi added.

Mama Mildred was known for her unwavering support for her children’s sporting careers.

As the Wanyama family mourns the loss of their beloved matriarch, tributes continue to pour in from across the nation, honouring a woman who helped shape some of Kenya’s finest sports personalities.
