President William Ruto has issued a strong declaration that the government will no longer tolerate any threats against police officers, stressing that their safety is a top national priority.
He emphasised that the state has a duty to protect those who protect Kenyans.
Speaking on Saturday at State House, Nairobi, while hosting security and National Government Administration Officers from across the country, the President reassured the officers of full protection as they carry out their mandate.
“Every police officer who puts their life on the line to secure our children, our families, and our nation must know, their safety is guaranteed,” Ruto stated.
“As they serve the country, the government of Kenya, under my leadership, will ensure their families and lives are equally safeguarded.”
He condemned the growing boldness of criminal elements who have attacked police officers in recent days, warning that such actions are unacceptable and that it will no longer be business as usual.
"We cannot have a country where criminals are chasing police officers. If the life of a police officer is in danger, then no one is safe,” he declared.
Ruto affirmed that officers will be fully equipped to perform their duties without fear.
“You cannot secure others if you are not secure yourself. Our men and women in uniform must be protected and empowered to protect the rest of us.”
He further directed security officers to take charge of peace and unity initiatives in their respective regions, saying it is their responsibility not only to enforce the law, but also to lead efforts in national cohesion.
Ruto's remarks come in the wake of incidents where officers have been attacked by goons while on duty, the most recent being during Wednesday’s protests.
Several officers were assaulted in Nairobi.
Present during the event were Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, along with DCI boss Mohamed Amin and Deputy Inspectors General Gilbert Masengeli (APS) and Patrick Tito (KPS).
