Rashid Abdi, a pharmacy student at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Menza campus, has moved his fellow students and staff after donating Sh10,000 to his colleague Iddah Akoth.
Abdi, who is currently sitting his Final Qualifying Exams, made the donation on Thursday to his colleague Akoth, who is also a pharmacy student and has been struggling to make ends meet.
According to Rashid, after realising this, he thought of doing something to help; after all, he was taught the value of generosity at an early age.
“I thought of doing something for one of my comrades who is an orphan and has really been having a hard time,” Abdi said
“My parents always encouraged us to give. Religion, too, reminds us of the power of supporting others.”
The donation was made in the presence of Campus Principal Winfred Nguih and the Deputy Director Academics Nyamira Mwangi.
Both commended the initiative as a kind and timely gesture, as Abdi said giving is not new to him.
Abdi noted that giving is not new to him hence he is not stopping as he plans to continue with his generosity as he plans to continue on supporting Akoth.
“I have already reached out to some of my friends. We are planning a major fundraiser to support Akoth along with more of our colleagues,” he added.
Abdi’s generosity coincides with the KMTC alumni's official launch of a campaign set to happen on June 27, 2025, to raise funds for needy students, just a day after Abdi’s donation.
This comes at a time when students await disbursements from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) where KMTC received an allocation of Sh500 million from the exchequer Education Loans Board (HELB).
In order to support students in need, the College has implemented various strategies to provide support for them, including creating a central fund where institutions and well-wishers can contribute funds to support students.
