A group of protesters has been spotted playing football along the Thika Superhighway on Wednesday morning, during nationwide Gen-Z-led demonstrations.

In a video seen, the group was captured kicking a ball with excitement, as other protesters and bystanders watched from the sidelines.

The impromptu football match unfolded near the Githurai area, a hotspot of the protests, where transport operations have been paralysed.

Boda boda riders, wearing reflective jackets, were also spotted nearby, observing cautiously.

At the same time, bonfires were lit by unknown individuals that smouldered along the highway, sending large plumes of thick smoke into the sky.

Police officers were deployed in the area to maintain order, closely monitoring the crowd but allowing the peaceful activities to proceed.

The demonstrations, largely seen as commemorating one year since the Finance Bill 2024 protests, have spread across several counties.

Meanwhile, protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) gained momentum.

Police lobbed tear gas at demonstrators who had started gathering in the CBD.

Kenyans were walking to the CBD as vehicles were barred from accessing the city.
