A security guard stationed at Kenya Power's Stima Plaza headquarters in Nairobi was fatally shot during protests on Wednesday afternoon.
Confirming the incident, Kenya Power in a statement on Wednesday said the deceased, identified as Fred Wamale Wanyonyi, was on duty when the shooting occurred at the Kolobot Road entrance of the premises.
In a statement issued by Kenya Power, the incident took place at approximately 4:30 pm.
“We are deeply saddened to report that Fred Wamale Wanyonyi, a security guard stationed at our Stima Plaza headquarters, was fatally shot at the entrance of the building,” the statement read.
Kenya Power said Wanyonyi, who was employed by Hatari Security, was quickly rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for emergency medical attention.
However, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
“We regret the unfortunate death of Mr. Wamale and are working with the relevant investigative organs to unearth the circumstances under which the incident occurred,” Kenya Power stated.
The company conveyed its sympathies to Wanyonyi’s loved ones, saying, “Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
The incident occurred during large-scale demonstrations in Nairobi that marked the anniversary of the June 25, 2024 Gen-Z protests.
The protests, organised by young Kenyans largely through online platforms, were meant to highlight grievances related to governance, youth unemployment, and police brutality.
The city witnessed disruption of services, road closures, and heavy police deployment, especially in and around the Central Business District.
Throughout the day, law enforcement used barricades and force to control protestors.
According to reports by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), at least eight people across the country lost their lives during the protests, with over 400 injuries recorded, including among police officers and journalists.
Investigations into Wanyonyi’s death are ongoing.
Kenya Power has pledged its full cooperation with authorities as they work to establish the circumstances leading to the fatal shooting.
