The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has called on citizens to mark the first anniversary of the June 25, 2024, Gen Z-led protests peacefully and within the bounds of the Constitution.
In a statement, NCIC Chairperson Dr. Samuel Kobia urged all Kenyans, especially the youth, to exercise their right to assembly and protest in a responsible and non-violent manner.
“While civic expression is an essential part of our democracy, it must not be weaponised to promote hatred, discrimination, or violence,” Kobia said, underscoring the importance of maintaining peace during the planned commemorations.
Kobia also issued a strong appeal to the National Police Service, urging law enforcement officers to show restraint and avoid the use of excessive force during the demonstrations.
“The protection of life and the upholding of human dignity must be the cornerstone of all security operations,” he noted.
The Gen Z protests of 2024 were sparked by widespread dissatisfaction with governance and youth exclusion, capturing national and international attention for their scale, organisation, and digital mobilisation.
One year later, the NCIC has acknowledged the youth’s role in pushing for greater accountability and transparency in leadership.
“We commend the young people—particularly the Gen Z—for their active engagement in national discourse,” said Kobia. However, he warned against attempts by any groups or individuals to exploit the commemorative events for political or divisive purposes.
“Hate speech and ethnic contempt are serious offenses that threaten the social fabric of our nation.”
Kobia reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens—especially the youth—while promoting a balanced approach between free expression and the preservation of national unity and peace.
The NCIC also confirmed that it hosted Mumias East MP Peter Salasya on Tuesday for discussions centred on youth engagement, peacebuilding, and social cohesion.
According to Kobia, the MP expressed interest in working with the Commission to positively influence the youth and foster harmony in the country.
“He has reached out to the commission to explore ways in which he can constructively engage the youth and contribute to promoting harmonious coexistence in society,” Kobia said
