Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has made a strong pitch for Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to be included in a broad-based government.
The CS said the country cannot afford to exclude the Kamba community from national discourse, urging the former Vice President to join the government.
Speaking at a political event in Machakos County on Monday, June 16, 2025, Wandayi described the Kamba people as proud, loyal, and patriotic citizens who have stood by Kenya through thick and thin.
"We cannot afford a situation where Kenyans are heading into a serious political moment and the Kamba people are left behind. That would be unacceptable,” Wandayi said, calling for unity across all communities.
He emphasised that Kalonzo, as a respected national leader, has already proven his commitment to Kenya and deserves a seat at the table.
“Kalonzo has washed his hands, washed his face, and even washed his clothes—he is ready. He must be brought into the fold,” Wandayi declared metaphorically, suggesting that Kalonzo has fulfilled all expectations for national leadership.
Wandayi urged the government to embrace Kalonzo, stressing the need for inclusivity ahead of the 2027 elections. He thanked the Kamba community for their steadfastness, saying they remain vital to Kenya’s democratic journey.
“The people of Kamba are our brothers. We must walk together as one united Kenya,” he said.
The call comes amid sustained efforts by government-allied politicians to woo Kalonzo into joining the administration.
However, on June 15, Kalonzo scoffed at Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s overtures, asserting that he could not join what he described as a “blood-based government” and accusing the leadership of insincerity.
The Wiper leader maintained his commitment to the United Opposition and reiterated his alliance with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to unseat the ruling regime.
“I will work with the truthful man called Gachagua. I don't believe this broad-based government is anything to follow. It is blood-based, and the latest addition is Albert Ojwang’,” he said during a church service in Ngong’.
“You (Kindiki) should have apologised to Kenyans because you were the Interior Minister when Gen Zs were killed. Let’s start there. Then also apologise for Ojwang’s killing because you are now the Deputy President.”
In response, Kindiki urged Kalonzo to refrain from personal attacks, saying he would not engage in public exchanges out of respect.
In a statement on June 16, Kindiki said he had no issue with Kalonzo choosing not to work with him politically but cautioned against continued negative remarks.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering its development agenda for all Kenyans, regardless of political affiliation.
Kindiki also emphasised that mutual respect is essential in leadership.
“I hear my big brother Kalonzo has said he doesn’t wish to work with me politically. That is fine with me. For the unkind things he has said about me, I won’t answer him back publicly—not because I can’t, but because I don’t engage in public duels with people I respect,” Kindiki posted on X.
“If he continues, I will happily tackle him head-on. Respect is a two-way street. For now, Kalonzo will remain the good big brother I have known for decades.”
