Over 200, 000 youths earning income from digital jobs - PS Omollo

The jobs are ranging from content creation, freelancing to virtual assistance and e-commerce.

Interior Principal Secretary, Raymond Omollo has revealed that over 200,000 youth are actively earning incomes through online and digital jobs.

Omollo said that the jobs range from content creation and freelancing to virtual assistance and e-commerce.

As part of the government's drive under the Digital Superhighway and its commitment to growing the Digital and Creative Economy, all Technical Training Institutes (TTIs) across the country have now been fully equipped with modern computer labs.

“This strategic investment is aimed at equipping young Kenyans with essential digital skills, positioning them to thrive in the evolving global digital marketplace,” PS Omollo explained.

On June 17, 2025, the Kenyan government reaffirmed its commitment to expanding digital inclusion across the country.

PS Omollo emphasised the need to empower communities, particularly the youth, with digital skills to foster greater innovation and economic growth.

The PS who was speaking during the graduation of 290 trainees from the Huawei DigiTruck digital skills training programme in Homa Bay highlighted the importance of digital literacy in shaping the future workforce and ensuring online safety.

"Digital skills are no longer optional; they are mandatory. Whether you aim to start an online business, work remotely, or leverage technology to enhance your daily life, digital literacy is the key to unlocking opportunities," he said.

PS Omollo, further called on local leaders, businessmen and stakeholders to support digital education initiatives.

"When we invest in digital education, we invest in people. When we invest in people, we build stronger communities. And when we build stronger communities, we create a stronger, more prosperous Kenya."

Digital jobs is one of the various programmes initiated by President William Ruto and his administration to stem joblessness among the youth.

According to the National Council for Population and Development, about 67 per cent of Kenyan youths, who make up 35 per cent of the population, are unemployed.

Other jobs include jobs in other countries, the Affordable Housing Project, which is currently 150,000 housing units countrywide and has employed over 200,000 youths among others.

Ruto has urged the youth to take advantage of the various job programmes in his administration.
