The Judiciary has received a significant funding boost in the 2025–26 national budget, with an allocation of Sh27.8 billion, up from Sh24.7 billion in the previous financial year representing a Sh3.1 billion boost.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi announced the figures during his presentation of the Sh4.2 trillion budget on Thursday afternoon, noting that the increased funds will support the administration of justice across the country.
The higher allocation reflects the government’s intention to enhance access to justice and improve efficiency within the judicial system, Mbadi said.
“This will enable the administration of justice,” he stated.
The government has also proposed notable allocations to oversight and legal institutions. Mbadi allocated Sh4.5 billion jointly to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
This marks a modest increase from last year’s Sh4 billion for ODPP and Sh4.2 billion for the EACC under former Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u.
The State Law Office, which provides legal services to the government and supports law reform, has been allocated Sh5.3 billion, slightly lower than the previous year’s Sh6.9 billion.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Auditor General maintained its allocation at Sh8.7 billion.
The 2025-26 budget is estimated to have cost Sh4.2 trillion as compared to Sh3.91 trillion in the previous financial year.
Overall, the 2025–26 budget, themed "Stimulating Sustainable Economic Recovery for Improved Livelihoods, Job Creation, and Business and Industrial Prosperity," aligns with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), Mbadi said.
