Detectives are investigating an incident where a 72-year-old woman was among three people who were killed in a fire incident in a village in Kapsokwony, Bungoma County.

The incident happened in Chebaibai village on Saturday morning, police said.

The house belonged to one of the victims, the elderly woman identified as Evaline Maccan.

The other victims were two brothers aged 12 and six, police said. They are believed to be related.

The three were sleeping in the house when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire was not immediately established.

Witnesses and police said the victims were burnt beyond recognition. Their charred remains were found in the bedrooms where they had been sleeping. This was after the fire had been contained by locals long after it broke out.

The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and investigations, police said.

Detectives visited the scene on Sunday as part of ongoing investigations into the tragedy.

They want to establish if the fire was started by arsonists or was accidental.

Land issues have been the main cause of the arson cases in the area.

Police say most of the cases are pending in courts while some remain unsolved.

Elsewhere in Kaptama area, Mt Elgon, Bungoma County, two children were injured after being struck by lightning in an incident.

The children were admitted to a hospital following the Saturday evening incident.

The children aged 13 and nine were having lunch in their house when the incident happened.

They were admitted in the hospital in stable condition, police said.

The incident happened in Kaboywo village. There are calls to install harvesters in the village to address such threats.

Such incidents are common in the area amid calls for the installation of the gadgets to address the tragic trend.
