Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili, alias Babu Owino, has demanded an impartial pathologist to witness an independent post-mortem procedure on the body of Albert Ojwang.

Babu said the independent postmortem will reveal what manner of injuries that caused the death Ojwang.

Babu noted that the Kenyan Constitution and Criminal Justice System have a framework for dealing with any offence.

“There is no offence in Kenya punishable by extrajudicial killing as we keep witnessing from state security institutions,” Babu Owino added.

Ojwang, a teacher and father of two two-month-old baby, was allegedly arrested on Saturday in Homa Bay town over what authorities described as a "derogatory" post on X.

He had travelled to Homa Bay to visit family when he was picked up by police officers.

Ojwang was driven to Nairobi at Central Police Station for further questioning.

Police said he died by suicide after allegedly injuring himself while alone in a cell.

Babu further demanded that the IG of Police address Kenyans more comprehensively on what specific publication Ojwang made and what criminal offence it amounted to.

“Homa Bay has police stations and courts with competent jurisdiction. Why was it necessary to transport Ojwang more than 400kms away from his home after arrest?” Babu posed.

He also asked about the nature of the injury Ojwang inflicted on himself that led to his death, asking if there were any fellow inmates who witnessed these self-inflicted injuries.

He further urged IPOA to move in quickly with a robust investigation on the officers from Homa Bay and Nairobi on the circumstances of the arrest and death of Ojwang.

Kenyans are calling for a proper response from the IG of Police and the DCI on whether the National Police Service is the protector or killer of our fellow citizens.

He asked leaders to lead Kenyans in demanding justice for Ojwang to ensure justice is upheld.

“I believe that a vast majority of Kenyan police officers are doing the right job, and we cannot allow a few rogues to misuse national security instruments to terrorise innocent citizens.”
