Police probe 3 cases of suicide in different counties

Police said two of the deceased persons had attempted suicide earlier in the year.

Police in three counties are investigating separate suicide incidents reported on June 4, 2025, involving three individuals who were found dead in different parts of the country.

In Nyamira County, 43-year-old Polycap Ogeto Mosigisi was found dead in his semi-permanent house in Omwaro Village, Bosamaro Chache Location.

According to a report filed at Nyamira Police Station, the deceased was discovered hanging from a roof truss in the sitting room with a sisal rope around his neck. 

Preliminary investigations revealed that Ogeto had previously attempted suicide in January 2025 by ingesting poison. 

His family also reported that he often made suicidal threats while intoxicated. 

The body was moved to Nyamira County Referral Hospital awaiting post-mortem, as investigations continue.

In Nyeri County, police in Mukurweini are probing the death of 53-year-old Esther Wamboi Mwangi, who was found hanging inside her house in Thimu Sub-location. 

The deceased was discovered by her daughter at around 10am.

Police confirmed that Wamboi had attempted suicide three times earlier in the month. 

A post-mortem will be conducted at Mukurweini Sub-County Hospital Mortuary.

In Bomet County, a similar incident was reported in Kamongili Sub-location, Chepalungu Sub-county. 

Caren Chepkirui, a 36-year-old woman, was found hanging from a tree outside her house. 

The body was removed to the Longisa County Referral Hospital Mortuary. 

Police have opened an inquest file as they seek to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.

All three cases remain under investigation by the respective Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices. 

Authorities have not recovered suicide notes in any of the incidents.

An estimated 726,000 people globally commit suicide every year, according to the World Health Organisation's official statistics.

In a separate incident, police in Nandi County are investigating a mob justice incident in Samoo Village, where two men were beaten by residents after being found allegedly slaughtering a stolen cow.

According to a report from Mosoriot Police Station, the cow's owner located the suspects slaughtering the animal that had gone missing on June 3. 

Upon raising the alarm, villagers descended on the suspects with crude weapons, inflicting serious injuries.

Police intervened and rescued the suspects, who were taken to Mosoriot Sub-County Hospital for treatment. 

The carcass of the animal was recovered and documented as evidence. Investigations are ongoing.
