A man was shot and killed in a confrontation with Kenya Forest Service (KFS) personnel in Kibiri Forest, Vihiga County.

Police said one KFS officer sustained injuries after an altercation with individuals suspected of engaging in charcoal burning within the forest on June 2.

According to police, a team of KFS rangers had responded to reports of illegal charcoal activity in the area.

Upon arrival, they were reportedly confronted by five individuals, during which one ranger suffered deep head injuries.

During the confrontation, one of the individuals was fatally shot by the rangers.

The other individuals fled the scene, according to police.

Officers later responded to the incident and moved the body of 18-year-old Brian Machanga to the mortuary for a postmortem and further investigations.

Police noted a rise in deforestation cases in the area, prompting recent enforcement operations.

Charcoal burning is prohibited in the forest.

In a separate incident in Kimilili, Bungoma County, a 53-year-old woman died in a house fire.

Cathrene Sikulu was reportedly alone in the house when the fire broke out on June 2.

Preliminary police investigations suggest the blaze may have been caused by a gas cylinder explosion.

Her body was taken to the mortuary pending an autopsy and further inquiry.

Meanwhile, in Nambale, Busia County, a 56-year-old man wanted in connection with a murder case in Khwisero, Kakamega County, surrendered to police.

He was found with neck injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Authorities said he will be questioned once medically cleared.

In another case, police in Elgeyo Marakwet County are searching for a suspect linked to the killing of a nine-month-old baby in Kapyego village.

According to the child’s mother, she was attacked by a person known to her.

She reportedly fled the house for safety, after which the attacker allegedly turned on the baby, who was asleep in the bedroom.

The infant's body was moved to the mortuary as investigations and a manhunt continue.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
