At least two men were shot and killed in an attack by gunmen in Gof Dertu
Manyatta, North Horr, Marsabit County.
Police said this increased the number of people
killed in the area on the same day to four.
Police said an unknown number of gunmen attacked
one manyatta in the area, which belonged to a local Wayu community, for unknown
reasons.
The incident happened on May 19, raising tension
in the area amid efforts to contain further escalation.
As a result, two men identified as Bukuno Galgallo,
28, and Katello Guyo Galgallo, 25, were shot and killed.
Nothing was stolen during the incident, and the
motive of the attack is suspected to be retaliation in response to two other
men who had been found murdered in Qorqa sub-location earlier.
Police combed the area in a bid to catch the
assailants, but in vain.
The bodies were moved to a local mortuary
pending autopsy and other procedures.
Such incidents are common in the area, despite
efforts to contain them.
The clans usually fight over resources including
water, grazing fields, and animals.
This prompts attacks and counterattacks, which
have left many villages mourning and bleeding.
Authorities have rolled out programmes aimed
at enabling the locals to change their culture.
The programmes include increasing development
projects and opening up roads in the area.
The government has also rolled out an
operation to disarm locals of their illegal guns, which are fueling the
violence.
The county is among those under Operation
Maliza Uhalifu.
The operation was launched in 2024 and targets
Marsabit, Isiolo, Turkana, Meru, Samburu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, and West
Pokot Counties.
Tens of guns have since been recovered in the
exercise.
The government has also employed more
reservists to help in the operations amid the persistence of the attackers.
Interior
Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has been leading the campaign to address
the menace.
