Reverend Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett of St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish
Six suspects are in police custody following the brutal killing of Reverend Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett of St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, in what authorities describe as a targeted and heinous attack.
According to a statement from the National Police Service (NPS), the incident occurred in Mokoro Location, Kakiptul Sub-Location, Kabartile Village, shortly after the priest concluded a Jumuiya (small Christian community) mass in Kakbiken village.
The priest was reportedly ambushed and fatally shot at around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, just a kilometre from a local police station, as he travelled back to Tot with a catechist, who is now missing.
Police spokesman Muchiri Nyaga confirmed that officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) responded swiftly to the scene and immediately launched a manhunt.
"Six suspects have since been arrested and are currently in custody," he said.
Nyaga further stated that initial investigations indicate the killing is not linked to cattle rustling or ongoing banditry, which have plagued parts of the North Rift region.
"This was a targeted act of violence, and we are treating it with the seriousness it deserves," he added.
The National Police Service condemned the attack in the strongest terms, describing it as a "heinous act" and pledged to carry out thorough investigations to bring all perpetrators to justice.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett, as well as the parishioners of St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish,” the NPS said in its statement.
The Service also called on residents of the region to remain calm and cooperative, urging the public to assist in the investigation by providing any relevant information.
Citizens are encouraged to use toll-free hotlines 999, 911, 112, or report anonymously through #FichuakwaDCI at 0800 722 203.
“All information provided will be treated with utmost confidentiality,” Nyaga assured, reiterating the police's commitment to protect lives and property across the region.
The fate of the missing catechist remains unknown, and search efforts are ongoing.
