Former Mukurwe-ini MP Kabando wa Kabando has officially joined the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) and announced his bid for the Nyeri senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Thursday, Kabando confirmed both his new party affiliation and political aspirations.
“Registered as a member of DCP. Aspiring for Senator of Kenya to represent Nyeri #CountyOfGallantry. Crafting patriotic troops,” he stated on X.
Kabando also expressed confidence in the opposition's chances in the next election, predicting a decisive victory.
“Our #UnitedOpposition 2027 #1PresidentialCandidate for #Round1Win 70 per cent vote,” he added.
Kabando had first hinted at his 2027 senatorial ambitions on February 25, saying he would announce the party on which he would vie.
“We're now past 50 per cent of the current electoral cycle. I propose to vie for the seat of Nyeri Senator on the platform of accountability charter,” he said at the time.
In the 2022 general elections, Kabando contested the Nyeri Senate seat under Martha Karua’s Narc-Kenya party, which has since rebranded as the People's Liberation Party.
He lost to Wahome Wamatangi of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
DCP, founded by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was officially unveiled on May 15, 2025, at the party’s headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi.
The party’s ideology is centred on inclusive governance and citizen participation, encapsulated in its slogan, “Skiza Wakenya” (Listen to Kenyans).
Speaking during the launch, Gachagua said the DCP was formed after months of consultations aimed at redefining political leadership in the country.
“Kenyans have boldly told us they have a solution to the problems facing them. Kenyans have asked us to start a party which will form a government by the people for the people,” he said.
Gachagua emphasised that the party would focus on inclusivity, noting that it had already brought on board representatives from diverse demographic groups across the country, including Gen Z.
