Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has taken issue with former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, claiming they are influencing the youth against the Kenya Kwanza government.
Kingi alleged that both Uhuru and former Deputy President Gachagua have been mobilising young people to oppose the government without offering substantial justification.
He also criticised Gachagua over remarks he said could stoke tribal divisions, suggesting that such concerns contributed to his removal from office.
Speaking during a fundraising event in support of women's groups at Makindu Township in Makueni County on Friday, May 16, 2025, Kingi questioned the sincerity of Uhuru’s recent call for youth to take a more active role in governance.
“You were president for 10 years. You did nothing to empower youth and women. Please give us a break. Allow the current president to roll out his good plans to empower the youth. Incitement will not take us anywhere,” Kingi said, addressing Uhuru.
Uhuru has recently, both in Uganda and in Kenya, encouraged young people to rise up and defend their rights, urging them to participate more actively in national leadership.
Speaking at Makerere University in Uganda recently, Uhuru urged young people to contest modern leadership positions to help shape their nations' futures.
The former president's remarks have been interpreted by some government allies as a veiled call to challenge President William Ruto’s leadership in the 2027 elections.
At the same event, Kingi also claimed that Gachagua failed to support President Ruto’s efforts to engage the opposition during his time in office, framing it as part of a broader trend of divisive politics.
Describing the former Deputy President as “troublesome and a dangerous bully,” Kingi remarked that many Members of Parliament had previously been reluctant to confront him directly.
“Mwengi Mutuse boldly held the raging bull by the horns, put it down, and enabled its slaughter,” Kingi said, referring to the Kibwezi West MP’s successful impeachment motion that led to Gachagua’s removal from office.
Kingi made the remarks while leading Kenya Kwanza allies in an empowerment programme in the Ukambani region, part of ongoing efforts to consolidate support in Kalonzo Musyoka’s political base.
