ICT and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has affirmed that the state is not “in bed” with the Media Council of Kenya.
Speaking during the 2025 Annual Media Summit in South C, Nairobi, Kabogo said the council is not working subjectively to please the government of the day.
The CS commented the MCK for its unwavering commitment to professionalism and ethical journalism.
“The government is not in bed with the Media Council of Kenya (MCK). If I may use that language because it is commonly referred to, meaning that we do things that are there just to help the government,” he said.
Kabogo challenged the media to continue critising the government where need be, but to do it responsibly.
“Let us report things as they are. It is important to report responsibly,” he urged.
The CS decried misreporting, giving an example of the statement by President William Ruto regards ending of abductions.
Kabogo said the story was twisted in its reporting, calling it inappropriate.
President Ruto on Monday assured the country that all Kenyans reported missing under suspicious circumstances had been safely reunited with their families.
He emphasised his administration's commitment to preventing enforced disappearances.
“All the people who disappeared or were abducted have been brought back to their homes. I have given clarity that nothing of that nature will happen again,” he said during a joint address with Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
The sentiments raised concerns with Kenyans wondering whether they were an admission of guilt.
Kabogo emphasised the importance of accuracy, fairness, and objectivity in reporting, urging for a synergy where all Kenyans can walk together to make the country better for future generations.
At the same time, he reiterated that the government recognises the freedom of expression as enshrined in the Constitution.
“The government will not suppress the media; press freedom is vital and must be protected,” he said.
Kabogo said the government will support and collaborate with the media fraternity to build a media ecosystem that serves the public good.
“We are advancing digital policy, literacy, and infrastructure to bolster public and community media.”
