The East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy
and Efficiency (EACREEE) and The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale
Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Green
Hydrogen in East Africa.
The pact signed in Nairobi aims at developing and sharing regional policy briefs to guide the development of national and regional green hydrogen frameworks.
It will also build the capacities of institutions and individuals
through training sessions, site visits, and the development of learning
resources.
“Green hydrogen has the potential to transform Eastern
Africa’s energy landscape and usher in the region’s green industrialisation
future. Through this MoU, we aim to foster partnerships, dialogue, and capacity
development that could help shape a greener future for the region,” said Bodo
Immink, GIZ Country Director.
The deal will also explore joint efforts in concluding a
baseline study on green hydrogen in East Africa, aimed at assessing the current
state of development, identifying regional potential, analysing policies and
regulatory frameworks, and exploring trade opportunities and other
opportunities related to green hydrogen in the region.
“This collaboration expresses our joint aspiration to
position Eastern Africa as a frontrunner in green hydrogen innovation. We look
forward to working closely with GIZ to build the technical and institutional
foundations needed to scale up this opportunity,” stated Canon Goddy Muhanguzi
Muhumuza, Executive Director of EACREEE.
The MoU represents an important expression of mutual interest to cooperate in advancing green hydrogen initiatives and underscores a shared vision for a sustainable, low-carbon energy future in East Africa.
