  • “No expired products have been found on our shelves, and we maintain stringent internal quality control and stock management systems across all our branches.”
  • The supermarket further clarified that none of its branches, in Nairobi or elsewhere, have been shut down by regulatory authorities.

Naivas Supermarket has refuted allegations circulating on social media and certain media outlets that the retail chain has been selling expired products.

The supermarket further dismissed claims that its Nairobi branches have been ordered to shut down by county health authorities.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Naivas categorically denied the accusations, terming them as “false, misleading, and potentially harmful.”

The company reassured its customers and stakeholders that all its products are subject to rigorous internal quality checks and stock management protocols to ensure safety and compliance with Kenyan health regulations.

“No expired products have been found on our shelves, and we maintain stringent internal quality control and stock management systems across all our branches,” the statement read.

The supermarket further clarified that none of its branches, in Nairobi or elsewhere, have been shut down by regulatory authorities.

The clarification comes after reports claimed that the Nairobi County Assembly's Health Committee had directed the closure of all Naivas stores in the capital.

The reports alleged that expired items, including yoghurt and products without expiry dates, had been discovered during an inspection. Additional accusations suggested that the retailer employed uncertified staff.

Naivas, however, dismissed these claims, maintaining that the accusations were baseless and possibly motivated by malicious intent. The retailer also indicated that it is seeking legal advice on pursuing formal action against those responsible for spreading the allegations.

“Naivas has a very strict anti-bribery and corruption policy and will not submit to extortionary tactics,” the company asserted.

The supermarket chain, which is one of Kenya’s leading retailers, emphasised its commitment to upholding high standards in food safety, employee certification, and ethical operations. It called upon customers to disregard the misinformation and continue to shop with confidence.

Neither Nairobi County authorities nor the Kenya Bureau of Standards has issued any official statements confirming the closure or sanctioning of Naivas branches.
