In courts: Hearing starts in ex-football star Gatusso’s murder trial

The hearing of a murder case against former Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars football star Collins Okoth alias Gatusso will start today at the High Court in Nairobi.

Gatusso was last year charged with murder alongside his co-accused Sylvia Aoko. They are accused of killing three-year-old Pamela Atieno alias Scovian Maya.

The offence was allegedly committed on the night of April 21, into the morning of April 22, at Kwetu Apartments in Sinai, Lucky Summer estate within Nairobi. They have both pleaded not guilty.

The hearing starts today before Justice Alexander Muteti.

Elsewhere at the magistrate court, the hearing of a case in which former Kenya Bureau of Standards boss Bernard Njiraini was charged with theft of Sh20 million, condemned sugar resumes.

Njiraini was in 2023 suspended and charged with stealing 20,000 bags of condemned sugar. He was also charged with conspiracy to commit felony, abuse of office and interference with goods subject to customs control, among other counts.

He was charged alongside Kenya Revenue Authority deputy commissioner Joseph Kaguru, KRA staffer Derrick Kago, Peter Njoroge Mwangi and Crispus Waithaka Macharia who is a shipping agent at the Port of Mombasa.

Businessmen Mohammed Hassan Ali, Abdi Hirsi Yusuf and Pollyanne Njeri Kamau are the other three accused persons in the case.

They have all denied the charges and are out on Sh400,000 bail each.

The charge sheet stated that the brown sugar had been condemned and was intended to be used as raw material for the distillation of industrial ethanol. The state has lined up more than 40 witnesses to testify in the case.
