The trio, according to police, had in March 2025 requested a senior police officer in charge of a highly protected police installation located along Mombasa road in Athi River, Machakos county, to keep the said gold for them due to its safety.
The South Koreans were in the country for the real estate business within the Sabaki area and wanted to assist with the installation of solar panels for pumping water.
The matter was reported to Mlolongo police station as a theft of gold incident report on OB NO: 75/9/5/2025 at 10.00am.
“It was reported by a police officer that on 7th March, 2025, they received three investors from South Korea who were in Kenya on real estate business within Sabaki and wanted to assist them by installing solar panels for pumping water,” a police report seen by Star read in part.
The said officer stated that it was at that time the trio requested him to keep their gold worth Sh6 million in safe custody.
It was kept in an armoury steel box by one of his colleagues, an inspector.
“Towards the April Easter holidays, he asked the said officer to open the steel box in order to confirm if the gold was still there and upon being opened, found a metal resembling gold but not the one which had been kept,” the report read.
The scene was visited by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations detectives attached to Mlolongo police station, but no recovery was made. They have launched investigations into the incident.
When the Star reached out to the senior police officer said to have been requested by the foreigners to keep the gold, he admitted that indeed they had kept it as stated.
“Yes, it’s true. We kept the gold at the foreign investors’ request. I have reported the matter to Mlolongo police station and the DCI have launched investigations,” the officer told the Star by phone on Saturday.
