The United States has reiterated its support for the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio while meeting Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi in Washington DC further acknowledged Kenya’s principled leadership in fostering international peace and stability.
“The meeting also reflected on recent US actions addressing criminal elements destabilising Haiti,” a statement from the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary and the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs said.
It said Kenya expressed its hope that ongoing global security dialogues will further support comprehensive efforts to curb violent extremist threats globally.
The high-level bilateral meeting between Rubio and Mudavadi discussed matters of mutual strategic interest between the two nations.
The discussions centered on peace and security, deepening trade and investment ties, and strengthening diplomatic cooperation.
Both parties reaffirmed the long-standing and mutually respectful relationship between Kenya and the United States, built over decades of shared values and collaboration.
The Office of Prime Cabinet Secretary added that Mudavadi also briefed the U.S. side on the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC)-led peace initiatives including the appointment of five Heads of State to champion the peace process in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
“The United States committed to supporting these efforts in coordination with the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to foster a durable resolution to regional conflicts,” the statement added.
It said the leaders acknowledged the need to have collaboration on security programmes in the region, including information sharing, border control, and combating extremist groups.
“On economic relations, both sides agreed on the importance of expediting negotiations on trade. Both leaders reaffirmed the readiness to partner under a renewed framework that promotes shared prosperity and sustainable investment.”
Rubio is said to have expressed his intent to visit Kenya in the near future to further cement the bilateral relationship and deepen strategic ties.
