President William Ruto on Wednesday wound up his two-day working tour of development projects in Narok county.
The President held more than 15 meetings during the tour in which he assured Kenyans that he would fulfil the promises he made during campaigns for the 2022 presidential election.
The visit took him to Narok East, Narok North, Kilgoris, Emurua Dikirr, Narok South and Narok constituencies for development projects that ranged from launching construction of Narok International Airport and commissioning fresh produce markets to road construction to issuing land title deeds.
At Sogoo trading centre in Narok South Constituency on Wednesday, the President announced that the government would employ 20,000 more teachers at a cost of Sh2.5 billion in the next financial year.
This will be in addition to the 76,000 teachers already employed under his watch in the past two years on permanent terms.
Addressing wananchi at Sogoo, Ruto said: "Employing more teachers will ensure equity in access to quality education to all our learners."
The new recruitment drive will bring the total number of new teachers employed by the government over three years to close to 100,000.
Further, he announced that the government would spend Sh150 million to upgrade education facilities in Narok South Constituency, which has been sorely neglected for long.
Ruto also called on parents to take their children to school and directed National Administration officials to ensure that the order is followed through.
He was accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Governors Patrick Ole Ntutu (Narok), Joseph Ole Lenku (Kajiado), and Lati Lelelit (Samburu).
The President assured the residents of Narok that land disputes pitting clans in the county would be resolved amicably, adding that elders would be involved in resolving land conflicts as they are well-placed to deal with the issues.
"I have already asked elders from the Maasai and Kalenjin communities to meet and resolve the problem of land ownership in Angata Barakoi," he pointed out.
Speaking at Olchobosei grounds in Emurua Dikirr Constituency, the President said issuance of title deeds remains key to resolving land problems across the country.
The President issued more than 9,000 title deeds to the county residents, as he pledged to end for once and for all, the perennial land issues prevalent in the region.
He told opposition leaders to give their alternative agenda instead of criticising the government just for the sake of it.
"Those opposing our development initiatives should give us their alternative plan. We are implementing a plan that brings Kenyans together,” he said.
Earlier, he had laid a foundation stone for the Amalo Sub-County Level IV Hospital in Sogoo and inspected the construction of the Deputy County Commissioner’s Office.
He also launched the tarmacking of 28km Sogoo-Kimogoro-Melelo-Ololung’a and Ngoswani-Morijo roads.
Later, he issued land title deeds to the people of Enkoireroi-Olderkesi, Narok West Constituency.
At the Narok International Airport, whose construction he launched on Tuesday, President Ruto explained that it would boost tourism in the county by making access to the world-famous Masai Mara Game Reserve easier.
"Visitors to the Mara will be able to fly directly to the airport from anywhere in the world and then drive to the game reserve," he said.
The project is being undertaken jointly by the National Government and the Narok County Government at a total cost of Sh1.4 billion.
On electricity, he said the National Government will spend Sh2.5 billion this financial year to connect 15,000 households to power in the county.
President Ruto winded up his tour at Sekenani, Narok West Constituency, where he announced that the government has set aside Sh114 million to build the Ushanga (Beads) Hub in the area.
Others who accompanied him included Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, MPs, MCAs, and other leaders.
