Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said investigations are underway into the incident where a shoe was hurled at President William Ruto during his visit to Migori.
Addressing the press Tuesday in Meru, Murkomen confirmed that security agencies are probing whether there was a lapse in the President’s security detail and if the act had a deeper motive.
“We are investigating to establish if there was an intent to harm the President," he stated.
The CS noted that the security of the Head of State is paramount because the consequences of any harm are dire.
Noting that no effort will be spared in safeguarding the President and other VIPs, Murkomen said cases of some people with ill intentions cannot be ignored.
“We cannot rule out the existence of evil people in society who wish to harm others," he said.
Officials at State House have strongly denied claims that the shoe was intentionally thrown at the president.
The incident happened at Kehancha.
Reports indicate that as the president was addressing the residents, the crowd eagerly raised their phones to capture the him "when one creative citizen without a phone lifted his shoe in jest, pretending it was a camera."
"Someone beside him, annoyed that the ‘shoe-cam’ blocked his view, slapped it away. Unfortunately, it flew forward… straight toward the President," said a source.
At the same time, Murkomen confirmed that suspects in the murder of Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were have been apprehended, and a manhunt is underway for their collaborators.
“It is shocking to learn the gruesome manner in which this heinous crime was committed. The government guarantees the safety of all Kenyans, and the perpetrators will face severe punishment,” he stated.
The CS commended security agencies for swiftly arresting the suspects, attributing the breakthrough to advanced intelligence, technology, and public cooperation.
“These individuals were quickly picked up, sending a clear signal to anyone plotting harm against any Kenyan,” Murkomen said.
He noted that the slain MP was killed despite being under the protection of a bodyguard, calling it unfortunate and raising concerns about security for public officials.
“Our commitment is to ensure the safety of every Kenyan, regardless of their status,” he emphasised.
