Leader of Minority in the National Assembly Junet Mohamed has rebuked Kenyans who take to social media to celebrate when politicians encounter misfortunes.
Speaking at the requiem mass of the late Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were at the Consolata Shrine in Westlands, Nairobi, Junet said politicians are human beings who have families and friends.
“I want to ask Kenyans who celebrate the death of a leader to stop it. Politicians are also fathers, they are husbands and have families,” he stated.
The Suna East MP said Kenyans who feel wronged by politicians should wait for them at the ballot and vote against them.
“If you have a problem with a politician, wait for elections and deal with him. Do not celebrate when he has a problem," he said.
"We have seen time and again people celebrating on social media that a leader has died. Even those celebrating will one day die one day and they will not want people to celebrate their deaths,” he added.
Junet maintained that Kenyans must also learn to respect bereaved families.
“Please respect families of politicians. They are also human beings, lets accord them the necessary support they need when they are grieving,” he urged.
He further cautioned Kenyans against associating people with claims they cannot substantiate.
Junet asked investigative agencies to expedite the probe into Were’s killing.
The MP was shot dead on April 30 near City Mortuary by a lone gunman who escaped on a motorbike.
Police said the suspect had trailed the MP's vehicle all the way fro Nairobi CBD after he concluded the day's business in Parliament.
Police said the murder was premedidated. An autopsy revealed that he was shot five times at close range and succumbed to the injuries.
Junet asked Kenyans to exercise empathy following the unfortunate incident.
“We are not saying this because he is an MP. He is a Kenyan; he is a father and he is a leader who has the aspirations and mandate of over 100,000 people," he said.
He called for thorough investigations into the murder.
"All those who he was leading want to know why their MP was killed. I would like investigative agencies to give answers so that the family can come to terms with the loss of their loved one.”
Were had publicly warned of threats to his life.
