Residents in several Nairobi estates have been asked to brace for a water supply interruption.

“This is due to ongoing repair works on six pump motors and their electrical control panels at Kabete pumping station,” Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Managing Director Nahason Muguna said.

In a statement on Wednesday, Muguna said the areas affected include Estates along Naivasha Road, Kawangware, Gatina, Kabiria, Riruta Satellite, Dagoretti Corner, the whole of Ngando, Kangemi, Mountain View, Karen and Ongata Rongai.

“The pumps, at Kabete, assist to increase water pressure and move the flow towards Dagoretti and Uthiru reservoirs,” he said.

“The damage was orchestrated by the failure of a butterfly pump at the Kabete Water Treatment Works on May 4, 2025, splashing water to the pump motors and control panels, resulting in the damage. “

Muguna said the technical team spent the better part of Tuesday repairing the pipeline, adding that the work is currently ongoing.

“The repair of the motors will be completed later today, May 7, 2025, at 9 pm. Water supply to the affected areas will resume tonight,” he said.

Last month,  Senior officials from the National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority, together with members of the Water and Sanitation Committee, have agreed on modalities under which the authority can collaborate with the county to improve water infrastructure.

The officials who made a rare appearance at the Water committee explained how the county can benefit from some of its services.

Led by the body's Chief Executive Officer Julius Mugun, the officials shared various areas to explore, among them flood control and drainage management, rainwater harvesting, drilling of boreholes and rehabilitation of existing ones.

The Authority has implemented several water for schools projects in Nairobi and is seeking to tap into the Nairobi situation where flooding is common, while water harvesting is hardly practised.

The authority is seeking to formulate strategies for sustainable development and maintenance of water systems, a joint venture to explore measures to mitigate flooding and improve drainage systems and advocacy for adoption of environmentally sustainable rainwater harvesting practices.

It is also seeking collaboration on projects to advance access to reliable water sources through borehole initiatives.
