Wajir was the safest county in 2024, KNBS report shows

Wajir was the safest of the 47 counties last year, a survey published by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics shows.

The Economic Survey 2025 said Wajir had the least number of crimes reported to the police by the Command Station, with 358 incidents recorded.

Wajir was closely followed by Mandera and Lamu, where 373 and 401 incidents were reported, respectively.

Other counties where few incidents were reported included Samburu (414), Tana River (436), Garissa (646), Taita Taveta (760), Elgeyo Marakwet (802), Isiolo (825) and West Pokot (849).

The survey said governance, Peace, and Security statistics are critical in determining the success of economic policies or major factors influencing the level of national development and the well-being of the population.

It noted that crimes reported to the police decreased by 3.6 per cent to 101,220 in 2024.

It said police repossessed 179 illegally held firearms in 2024 compared with 104 firearms in 2023. “About 26,900 kilogrammes of dangerous drugs were seized in 2024,” it said.

The report noted that there was a general decrease in all crimes reported to the police except for criminal damages, offences involving police officers and other penal code offences, which increased by 0.8, 36.7 and 16.0 per cent, respectively, in 2024.

It said traffic offences and offences involving tourists had the most significant declines in 2024, decreasing by 58.4 per cent and 42.6 per cent, respectively.

“The number of other offences against persons and stealing jointly accounted for 42.0 per cent of all the crimes reported in 2024,” the survey said.

The report noted that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution registered a 15.3 per cent and 32.7 per cent decline in the number of murder cases registered and convictions obtained, respectively, in 2024.

It said the Ethics and Anticorruption Commission (EACC) received 2,207 reports in 2023/24 compared with 1,968 in 2022/23, out of which 126 were forwarded to the ODPP.

“A total of 516,121 cases were filed in courts in 2023/24, an increase of 21.6 per cent from 424,324 cases in 2022/23, while the number of pending cases decreased by 2.2 per cent to 635,262 in 2024.”
