Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo wants Parliament to set up a select committee to look into the aftermath of last year’s protests that were led by the Gen Zs.

Speaking during Plenary, Odhiambo said a BBC documentary that has sought to expose police officers who shot dead protesters at Parliament buildings in Nairobi has elicited anger among the youth.

“I do not know what their intention is but from the young people I have spoken to, it has created more anger. We have taken them back to the path that they would rather not walk again. But they are walking it, and we do not know at what point somebody will fuel it again,” she said.

Odhiambo said Parliament needs to act, and suggested that it sets up a committee to look into the after-effects of the June and July 2024 protests.

“We think we are moving on but there are many young people who have not necessarily moved on. I appeal that we set up a select committee to deal with the the after effect of the Finance Bill 2024,” she said.

“We lost many young people and we have those who are traumatised as a consequence of what happened.”

Odhiambo argued that the country has not handled the issue well as many people are still disturbed.

“I think we have not handled the issue well, and that is why people are coming from outside to document the events of that day. We do not need the BBC to tell us that something is wrong. We have a very angry young generation and we cannot bury our heads in the sand,” she said.

The BBC documentary, which has amassed over two million views on YouTube within a day of its release, singles out security officers believed to have instructed officers to kill, as well as those who pulled the trigger.

Investigators said they analysed more than 5,000 images to piece together the sequence of events on June 25 and the placement of both the victims and the shooters.

Last June and July’s demonstrations against the 2024 Finance Bill and President William Ruto’s government were led by youth, commonly called Gen-Zs.

Dozens of people were killed as police used excessive force to tackle crowds in Nairobi and major cities and towns countrywide.
