Kenyan gospel musician Daddy Owen has revealed how he faced intense backlash following his performance during the Jamhuri Day celebrations
held on December 12, 2024.
Taking to his social media on Friday, the artist detailed
how Kenyans flooded his phone with calls even before he went on stage to
perform.
"On Thursday I was requested to go and perform at the Jamhuri day celebrations, and I accepted to perform. The weirdest thing that happened is before my crew and I just jumped onto the stage, I started receiving some phone calls when I was still backstage,” Daddy Owen said.
Daddy Owen revealed mixed reactions from the callers, with
some expressing disappointment over his decision to perform.
“And I know so many guys know my stand when it comes to how
things are in the country, and so many were shocked how come I accepted to go
and perform at the Jamhuri day celebrations.
Daddy Owen said he picked up some calls, aiming
to listen and engage with his critics. According to the gospel artist, the
reactions he received from the Kenyans varied.
“30 per cent of the callers just called to pour their insults, 20 per cent of the calls were from logical people who wanted to understand why I performed, and after speaking to them, they grasped the situation and another 20 per cent were just excited to have my number. Pure fans," he said.
Another 20 per cent of the callers were requesting for lunch, and some called about their genuine problems. 5 per cent tried to convince me that I did the right thing,” Daddy Owen added.
Reflecting on the experience, Daddy Owen compared it to what politicians often face when their numbers are leaked.
“My phone rang every minute, leaving no pause between calls. Important calls couldn’t get through,” he lamented.
The artist concluded by emphasizing that he performed for
his reasons and hoped people would respect his decision.
“At the end of the day, I held meaningful conversations with those willing to understand.”
