The Marketing Society of Kenya (MSK) has underscored the importance of equipping future marketers through mentorship programmes in the shifting landscape of the marketing field.

MSK on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, held an intergenerational dialogue in marketing under the theme, “passing the baton” in Nairobi, bringing together seasoned and upcoming marketers in the Kenyan marketing scene.

The dialogue aimed to equip younger marketers with tools and strategies for success in an evolving digital landscape.

“As MSK we realised that we needed to equip our future marketers and give them opportunities and that is why we decided to have this gathering, the chair’s breakfast, which has been able to bring together legends of marketing to be able to walk together with our students,” MSK chairperson Zuhura Adhiambo said.

Adhiambo emphasised the organisation's dedication to promoting mentorship and knowledge transfer within the marketing field.

Adhiambo underscored the importance of collaboration between academia and the marketing industry.

She highlighted ongoing efforts to align university curricula with real-world marketing practices.

“We’ve engaged with institutions such as Dedan Kimathi University, St Paul’s University, Maseno University, and Pwani University. These interactions also allow us to mentor students who may not have access to Nairobi’s marketing hubs,” she added.

The mentorship initiative involves pairing students with industry professionals creating opportunities for internships and entry-level jobs.

Corporate members within MSK play a pivotal role by offering placements and sharing job openings, fostering a supportive environment for aspiring marketers.

Adhiambo stressed that the mentorship program benefits all levels of the industry.

“We now have marketing legends holding the hands of others. Marketing directors can mentor their peers, and middle-level managers can engage with everyone. It’s a collective effort, creating a ‘whole village’ approach,” she said.

The dialogue also provided a platform for agencies and marketers to exchange insights on navigating the dynamic marketing field, particularly in an increasingly digital world.

“By promoting collaboration and knowledge transfer, we aim to enrich marketing practices, enhance strategies and equip the next generation of marketers with the tools they need for success in an increasingly digital world. Data mining is one of the tools that can provide marketers with a competitive edge.”
