  • “I have done my statement. I have done my part as a citizen, as a person who has been mentioned. Let it be known, that I have brought myself to the DCI."
  • Nassir said the public and anyone with information that can help the police pin down the perpetrators should also come out and record their statements.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir was on Thursday afternoon grilled by detectives in Mombasa in relation to the alleged sodomy of a Mombasa blogger.

For the past two weeks, Nassir has been under fire over the incident.

Nassir and his confidant, Mohammed Hussein alias Amadoh, are being investigated by the police in connection with the incident that allegedly took place on September 12.

Four people have already been charged in connection with the incident, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation said 15 more people, including Governor Nassir, his mother, and Amadoh have questions to answer.

Both Nassir and Amadoh have denied the allegations.

Amadoh has since recorded a statement with the police after his arrest on Sunday. However, he was released on Monday afternoon after his lawyers produced High Court orders barring his arrest and prosecution.

On Thursday afternoon, Nassir drove to the Coast Regional Police headquarters, where he was grilled for more than one hour by the DCI officers about the incident.

Nassir said he told the detectives all that they wanted to hear.

“I have done my statement. I have done my part as a citizen, as a person who has been mentioned. Let it be known, that I have brought myself to the DCI. I did not even want this to be a charade, that's why I never even called anyone,” Nassir said.

Nassir said he condemned the incident, adding it had nothing to do with him.

“A young man has been, you know, something brutal that was done to him, and this is not about me. It would be unfortunate if others want to ride it to be on me,” Nassir said.

“There is no normal human being who will say that whatever happened was the right thing. Of course, I condemn it. But at the same time, we need to be able to now talk about justice for this young man.”

The governor said he is ready to also bring his 74-year-old mother to the DCI to record her statement.

“I have told them that if they do require my mother, by all means, I will bring her. The information that they required, I provided it. Whatever it is that they wanted, I was able to give it to them,” he said.

Nassir, who has just been in office for two years, said the public and anyone with information that can help the police pin down the perpetrators should also come out and record their statements.

“Every single person who has any form of information should kindly go to the DCI and be able to make their report. I am calling again for us to be able to get justice for this young man. Any single person who has any information whatsoever, please do avail it to the DCI,” he said.

He said the DCI should be allowed to do their work.

“These are things that we do not want to see not just in Mombasa but anywhere in this country. Let the DCI do their work. The truth will eventually be able to come out,” Nassir said.

The blogger was on September 12 reportedly abducted from his house in Bamburi Mwisho early in the morning and taken to a thicket in Miritini, where he was allegedly sodomised, before being dumped in Mwakirunge.

According to him, he had been duped; he was being taken to Nassir so he could apologise to him after verbally insulting him and his mother in a video he posted on social media.
