The body of a Kenyan man who died in the US has finally been brought back home for burial.
This is after well-wishers helped the family amid controversy involving his former wife.
The flight carrying the body of Wilfred Ojwang’ landed in Nairobi at 10:30pm on Saturday to the relief of the family.
The 40-year-old man died in Pennsylvania in May. He was found unresponsive in his car amid sweltering summer heat.
A row ensued after his Kenyan family was notified of his passing, with his divorced wife in America allegedly frustrating the processing of shipping his body for burial at his Butula rural home in Busia.
The estranged wife however denies ever frustrating the plans. She said her position had been misrepresented by some members of the family.
The deceased's sister Evelyne Ojwang’ has been on a frantic drive to raise close to Sh2 million within two weeks to stop cremation.
She said their 74-year-old mother would not recover if she did not see the body of her son.
Thanks to well-wishers, both in the country and in diaspora, the family was able to get all the funds to foot the funeral home bills and transport the body to Nairobi.
But the body did not reach Nairobi in good state, signifying it may not have been well preserved.
“The skull appears to have been opened but not well put back. There are also many open wounds that were not well sealed. The mouth is also opened,” the sister said.
But he is identifiable, she said.
“All the same, we are grateful that people helped us to ensure the body of our brother is brought home to rest and to ensure my mother gets the closure she was longing for.”
“My mum was desolate in mourning the death of our brother given that we just recently lost our father and my elder brother. I am now satisfied and have accepted that he is gone.”
