Fire at Mukuru kwa Njenga slums in Nairobi on August 6, 2024.

Residents of Mukuru kwa Njenga slums are counting losses after an early morning fire on Tuesday.

The fire razed homes and churches near Muhindi Mweusi Supermarket.

The flames erupted around 1 am, and despite the efforts of residents to contain the blaze, the fire consumed an extensive area.

The exact value of the damaged property remains unclear although area residents reported that ten blocks were reduced to ashes during the incident.

The incident comes barely a week after traders at Toi Market were on Saturday left counting losses after a fire razed their wares.

Four people were reported to have been burnt beyond recognition following a fire that razed down the market.

A child was among the four. The victims were attempting to save their belongings when they were overpowered by the flames.
