The Parliament was almost a ghost town on Thursday as members failed to show up for the budget reading.

The floor was full of empty seats as many MPs did not attend the national event.

The House has a total of 349 seats: 290 elected from the constituencies, 47 women elected from the counties and 12 nominated representatives.

For important business such as Budget reading, the House is usually full to the brim.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung'u began reading the budget shortly after 3 pm.

During the reading of the 2023-24 Budget reading a section of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition MPs walked out of Parliament chambers as Ndung’u began reading the document.

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed maintained that the opposition did not recognise the 2023-24 budget stating that it does not serve the people.

“Azimio does believe in this budget. We do not think this is a budget meant for the Kenyan people. It is a budget meant for the Kenya Kwanza government so until we get a budget that is founded on the premise of the Kenyan people we will not participate,” he said.

Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, Babu Owino (Embakasi East) and Junet were among MPs who walked out.
