Traders in Nairobi's Industrial Area are up in arms over alleged extortion demands from state officials whom they say are demanding bribes with threats to demolish their buildings if they don't pay. The rogue officials claim the structures have encroached on riparian reserves and should be brought down. On Monday, a man claiming to be the an aide of a top-ranking official reportedly demanded that owners of some 14 buildings in the area each parts with Sh500,000 or risk having their properties demolished.
