Cop killed by speeding police vehicle at Bungoma roadblock

The deceased suffered serious head injuries and died on the spot, police said.

A policeman was killed after being hit by a speeding police vehicle at a roadblock at Cheptais Junction in Bungoma County.

Police said the incident happened Sunday night when Fredrick Juma attached to the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) in Bungoma West had stopped a trailer for a routine inspection. 

The trailer was heading towards Chwele from Sirisia. 

According to police, as Juma was interrogating the driver, he was knocked down by a Toyota Land Cruiser attached to Sirisia Police Station that was heading in the opposite direction.

This is after the driver said he lost control of the police vehicle and tried to avoid hitting the trailer.

The driver who was driving the Land Cruiser, maneuvered and managed to avoid the stationary trailer parked on the side of the road. 

The deceased suffered serious head injuries and died on the spot, police said.

Police moved the body to the mortuary pending investigations.

Elsewhere at Kenton along Ruiru-Kiambu road, an unknown motor vehicle driven by an unknown driver hit an unknown male pedestrian aged between 30-40 years and killed him on the spot.

The victim was also run over by several other vehicles after the Sunday night incident.

The body was moved to the City mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem.

At the Interchange area along Nakuru-Njoro road, in Nakuru, a pedal cyclist was knocked down by a speeding car in an accident.

The deceased was identified as George Kiptoo Tonui aged 21.

He suffered serious head injuries and died on the spot.

The body was moved to Nakuru Municipal Mortuary awaiting postmortem.
