Interior PS Raymond Omollo has said the construction of Masinde Muliro stadium, which is set to host this year’s Madaraka day celebrations, has experienced some setbacks.
Omollo told the press on Thursday during a tour at the stadium that the rehabilitation is facing a shortage of workers, adding that the government has deployed more National Youth Service officers to fast track its completion.
“We have had some slight delays in the completion of the stadium with a lot of work in installing terraces,” the PS said.
He said the stadium, the state lodge and Matulo airstrip in Webuye are almost done.
“Together with my fellow PS’s have moved around the three facilities and confirmed that it is at 90 per cent complete.”
He was accompanied by Teresia Mbaika (PS Devolution) and State Department of Performance and Delivery management PS, Veronica Nduva.
Omollo added that rehabilitation of feeder roads within Bungoma county is ongoing.
Regarding the re-opening of schools, the PS said the government has put in place necessary mechanisms to ensure that learners are kept safe in schools in the flooding counties.
“There are a total of 21 counties that have experienced huge impacts by heavy downpour, it is necessary for rehabilitation to be done to the affected schools to make learners comfortable as they resume classes,” he said.
The National government will rehabilitate the affected schools to make learners secure amid the raging floods.
“County governments are working closely with the National Ministry of Education (MOE) to ensure a smooth transition as kids resume learning.”
On Wednesday, President William Ruto directed all teachers and parents to prepare for school resuming on Monday next week.
Omollo cautioned drivers to be careful on the road while ferrying learners back to their respective schools.
“We expect to see many learners starting tomorrow to Monday moving to school and we are advised to be cautious on the roads as many bridges has been swept by the raging floods,” the PS said.
