The government has advised Kenyans to take precautions in the wake of the ongoing heavy rains.

So far, Kenya has lost 103 people due to the flooding across the country, according to government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura.

Speaking in Mombasa, Mwaura said the number of casualties could be higher.

The figure does not include the Mai Mahiu tragedy where at least 42 have been confirmed dead.

Some 28,484 households have been displaced with 185,297 people affected.

In Homa Bay, the severe flash floods that swept the Sindo area Sunday night have seen several people missing.

"Two bodies have so far been retrieved. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing," Mwaura said.

He said the government is undertaking needs assessment in Nairobi, Makueni, Machakos and West Pokot counties over the rains.

The government spokesperson said search and rescue efforts for the Sunday 6.30 pm Tana River boat tragedy are ongoing.

The boat was ferrying 43 people from Lamu when it capsized.

Twenty-two people were rescued, he said.

A government delegation will be heading to the area tomorrow.

In Kilifi County, some 1,800 people and 650 households have been affected by the heavy rains because of the flooding of River Sabaki.

Some 7,000 acres of farmland have been destroyed affecting 600 farmers.

The government will be distributing aid in the form of food items, mosquito nets, blankets and other necessary stuff to the affected persons countrywide.

Mombasa has received moderate rains so far.

However, county transport and infrastructure executive Dan Manyala said they have made necessary plans to ensure the effects of the rains are mitigated.

"We thank the national government for their support. We have been coordinating well to ensure we mitigate the potential effect TS of the rains," Manyala said.

Mwaura said there are over 50 camps that have been established across the country to shelter those affected by floods.

There are also over 20 social halls that are being used to shelter flood victims across the country.
