National Assembly’s Committee on Agriculture has revealed that another company linked with the distribution of fake fertilizer under the subsidy program is under investigation.

The MPs claimed the company supplied the substandard fertilizer without the necessary certifications.

Committee member Justice Kemei said they are yet to get more information about the company.

They made the remarks after they conducted inspection visits in Sotik, Ndanai and Kilgoris NCPB depots in Bomet and Narok counties.

“It is only yesterday that we received information that another company was awarded a contract to distribute the fertilizer without meeting the required quality requirements," Kemei who is also Sigowet/Soin MP said.

"The company in question did not also present samples first before being given a go-ahead in the job."

In attendance were committee vice chairman Brighton Yegon (Konoin) and Patrick Osero (Borabu).

The members also called on NCPB to provide them with information concerning the particular company.

“The first contract awarded to these companies was in January where they supplied 50,000 bags while the second was in March as per the government records,” he stated.

“As residents, kindly assist us with the information you have so that it can be used in our report and advise the government through investigating agencies on actions they should take against these individuals.”

Kemei made it clear that the government does not manufacture the fertilizer but they only award tenders to companies with specified varieties.

“We want to know the owners of the vehicles who supplied the fertilizer and those owning these companies,” said Kemei.

He also told the farmers not to worry as those who were capable of these fertilizer scandals would be prosecuted as the House wanted to correct the mess created by a few selfish individuals.

“Our mandate as the Parliament is representation, legislation and parts of plans to ensure that people get efficient service delivery, who started moving around to get views from the Kenyans so that the information can help us and advise the relevant authorities to take actions against individuals who were behind this scheme,” said the MP.

On their part, Yegon and Osero maintained that farmers who were duped into buying fake fertilizer must be compensated in full and those involved face the law.

“The farmers should be compensated fully and those engaged in these scandals should face the full wrath of the law,” Yegon said.

Osero said that as lawmakers, they want to establish how the alleged fake substance found its way into government stores and to what extent the fertilizer has been sold to the farmers.
