The Kenya National Highways Authority has started to rehabilitate and dual Moiben-Eldoret Airport Road in Uasin Gishu county.

The first phase of dualling will start from Chepkoilel junction and will end in Mlango on the Uasin Gishu-Nandi county border.

The aim is to ease traffic congestion ahead of elevation of Eldoret town to city status.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii on Tuesday held a consultative meeting with Kenha officials to discuss ways of ensuring smooth implementation of the project.

The scope of the project will include improvement of link roads in the six subcounties of Ainabkoi, Soy, Kesses, Moiben, Kapseret and Turbo.

Bii urged Kenha to prioritise local manpower and establish good plans for compensating residents who will be affected.

“My administration has plans to construct a museum and we urge Kenha to extend a hand to support us for the success of the project. We also urge you to support the beautification of our established arboretum and rehabilitation of river Sosiani and other ongoing environmental programmes," he said.

"As captured under agenda six of the Nguzo Kumi blueprint, road infrastructure enhancement and expansion are among our key focus in supporting economic and social growth of our residents."

On Monday, Kenha held stakeholder engagement and public consultative forums for the implementation of phase one in Moiben centre and Eldoret Polytechnic.

More public forums will be held in Kapseret, Kesses, Ainabkoi and Turbo to ensure all concerns are captured.

The forums will focus on design review of Moiben junction-Eldoret town-Eldoret International Airport (21.5km) and feasibility study.

They will also look into environmental and social impact study, preliminary engineering design and preparation of tender documents for the dualling and rehabilitation of Eldoret International Airport-Kapsabet (33.5km) road.

Uasin Gishu Roads executive Joseph Lagat urged Kenha to consider the improvement of identified link roads, which will enhance transportation of goods and services, especially in accessing social amenities and markets.

"Our engineers have already identified the link roads we would like you to support us improve to bitumen standards," he said.
