President William Ruto on Thursday led other leaders in condoling with the family of former President Daniel Moi (deceased) following death of his adopted daughter June Chebet.

The Moi family announced the death of the Canada-educated businesswoman on Thursday morning, with reports suggesting she succumbed to breathing complications.

The family said they will guard their privacy during the season of mourning.

"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing on of our beloved, June Chebet Moi this morning," the statement said.

"At this time of grief, we request your prayers and privacy as we the family come to terms with the tragic loss of our sister. May her soul rest in eternal peace," the family added.

Leaders describe her as "peaceful, hardworking, lovely and wonderful woman" who knew how to relate with people.

Ruto said he wished the family strength and peace as they endure the loss.

"My heartfelt condolences to the family of the late President Daniel arap Moi over the loss of June Chebet Moi. May God give you strength at this difficult time. Rest In Peace June,” he wrote on social media.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said her "charisma and charming demeanour were truly remarkable".

Cooperatives CS Simon Chelugui said, "I am saddened by the news of June's death and I hereby join other Kenyans in mourning with you the passing on of this wonderful lady, a patriot.”

Moi had five sons and three daughters, among them a set of twins.

June was adopted by the former President and became integrated as part and parcel of the family.

She attended Nairobi Primary, Kenya High School and then moved on to a university in Canada. She was a successful businesswoman.

Moi's children include Gideon, who is Kanu party leader and former Baringo senator, Philip, a retired army major, and Jonathan Toroitich (deceased), a former rally driver.

Moi married his wife Lena Moi, daughter of prominent Eldama Ravine farmer and pioneer Christian Paul Bomet in 1950.

Lena, a trained teacher, later took up the role of a full-time housewife to raise the children as Moi's political career took root before the two separated in 1974.

The first family later went through a quiet divorce five years later in 1979.  The former president never remarried.

Lena retreated to a quiet life at her Rongai farm where she passed on in July 2004 after a long ailment.

Chebet and Gideon were said to be Moi's favourite children.
