Over 1,000 households in the City's informal settlement were affected by Sunday's heavy downpour which caused flooding, Kenya Red Cross has said.

The rains, which started at around 7 pm rendering roads impassable, persisted almost overnight causing untold suffering across Nairobi.

Police said at least four people drowned while many are still missing.

In a statement regarding its assessment on the matter Monday evening, Kenya Red Cross said dwellers in the city’s sprawling slums of Mukuru Kwa Njenga and Mukuru Kwa Reuben were among the worst hit.

“After last night's heavy downpour in Nairobi, our Red Cross Action Team conducted assessments in several affected areas. Approximately 1,180 households have been identified as affected in various informal settlements we visited,” the statement said.

The meteorological department said in its 24-hour forecast issued Monday that the heavy rains are expected to continue over several parts of the city.

It said rains of up to 20mm are expected in Westlands, Dagoretti North and South, Lang’ata, Kasarani, Royasambu, Embakasi South and East as well as Kibera.

The forecast said residents of Upper Tana River Basin should also anticipate varying levels of rainfall across the basin from Monday night.

Rains are also expected in Kitale, Mombasa, Eldoret, Kisumu, Nyeri, Lamu, Makindu, Marsabit, Kakamega, Malindi, Voi, Wajir, Mandera, Moyale, Kericho, Kitui, Narok, Meru, Kisii and Machakos.

In light of the anticipated heavy rains in parts of the city, Red Cross issued safety tips which it advised city dwellers to observe to protect them from potential hazards posed by flooding.

The organization advised the use of a stick to measure the depth of water in flooded areas, switching off the main switch in case the house gets flooded and avoiding muddy areas where power lines appear to have fallen to avert the potential risk of electrocution.

It also advised against walking or driving through flooded sections of the road or flooded bridges or parking near or around streams or rivers during heavy downpours.

“Just six inches of moving water can knock you down. Just one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away,” the Kenya Red Cross warned.

The organization further advised that one should evacuate as quickly as possible to safer ground in case their area of residence becomes flooded and should ask for assistance in case of emergency via toll-free line 1199.
