Some 4,800 alcoholic outlets operating within prohibited proximity to schools have been closed and their licenses revoked in the ongoing crackdown on illicit brews.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said over 9,500 unlicensed alcoholic drinks selling premises have also been shut and 12 distilleries of toxic brews destroyed to disable further production.

“All licenses of manufacturers and distillers of second-generation alcoholic drinks remain suspended and production prohibited until the completion of ongoing security and compliance vetting by the end of this month,” Kindiki said.

He said 258 suspects have since been arrested and arraigned, 15kgs of bhang seized, 22 non-compliant pharmacies and 19 non-compliant agrovets shut in the ongoing nationwide law enforcement programme.

Kindiki spoke on Friday in Tala, Matungulu subcounty in Machakos County where he chaired a sitting to review law enforcement measures and strategies to flush out drug dealers, shisha consumers and sellers, and criminal gangs.

Machakos County Security Heads and their matches from the Matungulu subcounty attended the meeting.

It was his second meeting of the day following an earlier one held in Kitui town Friday morning.

Kindiki directed the law enforcement agencies in Machakos County to roll back the rising cases of drug peddling, sale and consumption of narcotic drugs and shisha.

He also directed them to act on rising cases of child pornography within Tala and its environs and the entire Matungulu subcounty.

“Some of the criminal gangs terrorising the Nairobi Eastlands, according to credible intelligence are using suburbs of Tala Township to plan their crimes and to debrief,” Kindiki said in a statement after the meeting.

He said the crackdown to rid the county of illegal businesses and the perpetrators of the crimes shall continue alongside the countrywide crackdown to rid the country of illicit brews, narcotic drugs and substance abuse.

While speaking in Kitui town, Kindiki said the government will hold every Commander of a Security Agency across the country individually accountable for security breaches within their jurisdictions.

He said this would be implemented except in incidences where it is demonstrable that the security chiefs had taken reasonable measures to avert or mitigate the breach.

“Every County Security Team is directed to adopt and implement a measurable Security Management Plan for maintenance of law and order, preventive security measures, effective command and control of subordinates and timely law enforcement,” Kindiki said.

He issued the directive after concluding a situational review with Kitui County Security and Intelligence Heads in Kutui town Friday morning.

The CS tasked them to address the security challenges facing the county saying the resolution of disputes between farmers and herders and resolution of disputes over administrative boundaries remain the other key deliverable areas.
