There once existed a monolith known as Kenya Post and Telecommunications Corporation.

It handled issuance of telephone lines, postal matters, issuance of broadcast frequencies and all other matters appertaining to communication.

The corporation was so large, overstaffed, corrupt, inefficient and loss making.

Appointments to head it were political and the CEO had not only to come from the right tribe but also have the president's ear.

Upon sale, the corporation gave birth to Safaricom, Communications Authority of Kenya, Telkom and Postal Corporation of Kenya.

Safaricome went ahead to become East Africa's most profitable company an indication of the huge untapped potential under Kenya Post and Telecommunications Corporation (KPTC).

The current-day replica of the Kenya Post and Telecommunications Corporation is Kenya Power. It has all the characteristics of KPTC.

Calls to have Kenya Power privatised must therefore be heeded to bring an end to its inefficiencies and make electricity in Kenya available and affordable.

Affordable and reliable power is a key ingredient to the manufacturing sector, which Kenya is banking on to industrialise.

A report tabled in Senate shows that the system losses experienced by Kenya Power in 2022 stood at about 26 per cent against an industry standard of 16 per cent.

Cries of inflated bills, blackouts and long waits for connections are the order of the day.

It is time Kenya Power joined its dinosaur ancestor KPTC
