Accident

A mechanic has died while his colleague sustained serious injuries in a road accident along the Nairobi–Namanga highway in Athi River, Machakos County.

Stephen Muchoku Mwangi died on the spot after a vehicle they were attending to was hit by another vehicle in an accident that involved multiple motor vehicles.

Athi River subcounty police commander Jos Mudavadi said the matter was reported to the Athi River police station as a fatal road accident incident.

Mudavadi said the driver of one of the motor vehicles was moving from Namanga's general direction towards Nairobi's general direction and made a right turn to enter a petrol service lane without due care leading to the accident.

“Due to the impact, the motor vehicle lost control and hit the motor vehicle registration which was parked at the side of the road (at the garage) and was pushed for about ten metres. That vehicle hit another vehicle which was being attended by two mechanics,” Mudavadi said.

He said as a result of the accident, the two mechanics were trapped under the motor vehicle they were repairing.

The police boss noted that after being rescued, one Stephen Muchoku Mwangi was found to have sustained serious injuries and died on the spot while an unknown male adult sustained serious injuries and was rushed to an unknown hospital.

He said officers from Athi River police station visited the scene and processed it before the body was removed to Shalom Community Hospital, Athi River awaiting a postmortem.

All the vehicles were towed to Athi River police station awaiting inspection.

“Efforts to trace the other victim are still underway,” Mudavadi said.

Mudavadi said they had launched investigations into the incident.
